Speech - Tax Reform
Last week Roger Brake, General Manager of the Tax White Paper Taskforce in Treasury spoke to Tax Institute Australia’s 48th South Australian Convention about tax reform. Here is an excerpt of his speech:
The need for tax reform can be seen in terms of challenges and opportunities.
I will mention three challenges: the first being the living standards challenge for Australia; the second, the impact of technological innovation and globalisation; and lastly, the ageing of the population.
Australia has been relatively blessed, experiencing almost a quarter of a century of uninterrupted economic growth and strong growth in our standard of living. Previous growth has been assisted by the rise in female participation, earlier waves of economic reform and the mining boom.
